Food is one of the strongest and most incredible holders of memories. The smell of the dish being created can transport you back many years to sitting at the kitchen counter watching your mom cook your favourite dish. The taste of macaroni cheese can remind you of those cold winter days sitting in front of the fire. Hot chocolate can send you back to winter treats on a school holiday. Cuisines can remind you of loved ones, past and present, while a specific dish can bring flash-backs of a certain event such as a Wedding, special birthday or just a fancy celebratory dinner.
Food and music have the ability to bring back memories I have long forgotten. I will take a double order of both.
I cook to feel calm, to feed my soul, to show love to loved ones, to remember the good times and honour those who are no longer with us.
May is always an emotional and soul searching month. It is the month in which my father and grandfather were born and it is also the month that they both left us. In honour of the men who I adore and love and to celebrate them I cook. I cook a lot and subsequently me, and all those around me eat a lot 😉 I cook their favourite meals or the dishes that they taught me how to make. It is a way I rejoice in their lives and the amazing memories they have given me which will be with me forever.
Every time I eat liquorice I am immediately transported to eating a sneaky treat with my grandfather.
Every bottle of red wine uncorked and enjoyed is in memory of my dad.
Scraping soul off the bone and eating hot chilli sauces send me straight to my special grandad.
Every reference to rabbit food, home made pasta morsel, a picture of a Lion lager beer, smell of sauteed onion and garlic is an homage to these incredible men.
Family and loved ones are the most important things in ones life. Food brings joy and is that not what life is all about?
Does anyone else have a special dish they love to make to bring about a wonderful memory?
