Unfortunately, I know too many people who have suffered from Breast Cancer. It is an awful disease that I wish I could eliminate from everyone’s life. When one of my mom’s friends was going through yet another round of soul-destroying chemotherapy she told my mom that if she could have done one thing differently in her life and what she will enforce with her daughter, is to stop using commercial deodorants. This really struck home with me. Commercial deodorants are full of toxic chemicals such as Aluminum-based compounds which are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary “plug” within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface (that does not sound good!) another terrible ingredient found in commercial deodorant are parabens. Parabens are endocrine-disruptors meaning they disrupt the synthesis and use of hormones such as your thyroid hormone, estrogen-progesterone and more – this is BAD news!
There have been no scientific studies done that prove that using commercial deodorants cause cancer, but why risk it? Deodorant/ Antiperspirant is something you use every day so make sure you know what you put on your body on a daily basis.
Since my mother’s friend made that statement (6 years ago) I have been making and using this deodorant. I live a very active lifestyle which includes running, gym, hiking and walking the dogs and this deodorant has never let me down.
The ingredients in this deodorant are coconut oil – which naturally hydrates and moisturises the skin, arrowroot powder which keeps you dry the whole day, bicarbonate of soda helps absorb sweat and odour and grapefruit essential oil which is a natural antibacterial which will help kill off the bacteria that causes odour. The deodorant forms a paste – to apply the paste put some on your finger and let it melt a little before rubbing it on your underarms.
Home Made Deodorant
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
1/2 Cup of Coconut Oil (Melted)
1/4 Cup Arrowroot
1/4 Cup Bicarbonate of Soda
20 Drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
- Mix together well.
- Store in a glass jar.
- Rub the paste on your underarms and it will melt onto the skin.
You can add an extra essential oil for scent but the grapefruit oil is antibacterial which will help control body odour.
